Census figures for 2009 — the recession-ravaged first year of the Democrat's presidency — are to be released in the coming week, and demographers expect grim findings.

Don't forget about Clinton. He inherited a deficit problem from the other Bush and we were headed in the right direction until Bush started spending money (a lot of it on this knuckle headed and obviously unsuccessful war on terrorism) like a drunken sailor.

AI IV,I drew my 20% number from OMB report (that's the White House's Office of Management and Budget). Here's a link to the webpage:http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/budget/HistoricalsSee Table 4.2 When you click on it, it will open a Microsoft Excel file. According to OMB, 'Defense' (Line 7) comprised 18.1% of the annual federal budget for 2009. Coupled with 'Other Defense-Civil Programs' (Line 21), which comprised 1.5%, defense spending comprised 19.6%. So I just rounded up. I suppose Veterans Affairs spending could be added in, but that was only 3.2%, bringing the overall total to 22.8%. Of a $3.5 trillion annual budget, that amounts just under $800 billion. With Obama's spending spree leading to an annual budget deficit of somewhere in the neighborhood of $1.5 trillion, even if Defense spending were to be cut off entirely, that would still leave an annual deficit of around $700 billion. Remember: The highest annual deficit when Bush was president and Republicans controlled Congress was $412 billion (2004). The 2008 deficit was $468 billion while Bush was president but the Democrats held the majority in Congress. These numbers come from the same link above, Table 1.3You'll notice Table 1.3 shows that annual deficits were declining until 2008 and revenues were climbing every year from 2004 to 2007. Spending increased every year as well, but jumped $260 billion in 2008. Democrats controlled Congress at that time and budgets originate in the House of Reps. Certainly Republicans were complicit in deficit spending. But if Bush was spending like a 'drunken sailor', it's not clear just how to characterize Obama's spending, which has been tremendously higher. For what it's worth . . .later. iowan15

Hopefully, the pummelling they have taken at the polls the last two election cycles, coupled with the opposition to Obamacare and trillion dollar 'stimulus' packages, has convinced them that the electorate is quite tired of massive government programs. It's clear the Democrats have no interest in reducing spending. It's still not clear to me why the revenue side of things can only be addressed by increasing tax rates, as Obama and liberal Democrats propose. I don't think there is any disagreement that revenues are down because economic activity has slowed and unemployment is so high. It seems to me that the best way to increase revenue is to increase economic activity. How raising tax rates will accomplish that is not clear.later. iowan15

The August figure was originally reported as a loss of 10,000.
The median of estimates from 38 economists surveyed by Reuters for the ADP Employer Services report, jointly developed with Macroeconomic Advisers LLC, was for a rise of 24,000 private-sector jobs in September."Presumably, these are some of the same 'economists' who believe that tax rate increases are the ticket to reducing unemployment.later. iowan15

"The number of Americans receiving food stamps rose to a record 41.8 million in July as the jobless rate hovered near a 27-year high, the government said.
Recipients of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program subsidies for food purchases jumped 18 percent from a year earlier and increased 1.4 percent from June, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said today in a statement on its website. Participation has set records for 20 straight months."Hope and change!!later. iowan15

More splendid news regarding the 'Summer of Recovery' . . .http://www.bls.gov/news.release/empsit.nr0.htmThe U.S. unemployment rate remained unchanged at 9.6% for September. The number of involuntary part-time workers rose considerably and private sector job growth remained stagnant. To address this problem, Dems will apparently allow the Bush tax cuts to expire, raising tax rates on every American taxpayer, reducing child tax credits, raising capital gains tax rates and estate tax rates.later. iowan15
