What seems expected to pass as the overall counter-point is a personal mischaracterization with negative intent. It falls short of the mark. As for the reference to hi-jackings, guns were not allowed to be carried onto planes any more than the bombs, real or pretend, that the hi-jackers claimed to possess. In virtually every State in the Union it was an illegal act for a civilian to just travel to an airport with a handgun on his person. There was just no screening for boarding passengers once they got there.

And, don't take the "polite society" too literally. In some societies politeness is not a virtue, but a weakness, where there are combative factions. However, within factions armed individuals aren't likely to be found shoving someone aside to gain a place in line at the market.
