The only "modern military force" native to that part of the world currently is the IDF (Israelis), part of the mission the US has taken upon itself is the creation of a second such force, the Iraqi Army.

It isn't unlikely that any territory abandoned by al Qaida or the various militias is essentially lost to them with little hope of recovery.

If we are to be serious the militias and others didn't overthrow Saddam (or even seriously try to do so) because they were unable to face his military forces. His military forces learned very quickly about their effectiveness when facing a "modern military force".

The ASP will likely have to change its position yet again. They cannot maintain their current views in the face of Iraq becoming a free country--no more than can their allies in al Qaida.
President Reagan summed it up nicely, "Some people go through their entire lives wondering if they made a difference, Marines don't have that problem!!!"
