I've lost sight of what these latter posts have to do with the topic of Amnesty. I gather there isn't enough interest in amnesty to hold posts closer to that topic. I'm not sure what religion has to do with amnesty.
My own thoughts on politicians and religion are that probably most politicians use it for their perceived gain. If they believe their audience has a religious bent, they will use it to score points. Once again, politics is a game. The only thing serious about politics and in part about government is the bad effect it has on individual liberty. Since that is an anathema to progressives, it's understandable that the game plans of many politicians follows certain perceived options.
Another good example of politics and game plans and one that gave me a good laugh at the time was John Kerry going hunting during the 2004 campaign with his gun held improperly because let's face it, John Kerry hates guns and his war experience wasn't the type that had him handling firearms. He had flunkies for his protection. But he wrongly thought his appearance in hunting gear and a gun was going to impress gun-rights voters.
But politicians routinely use props to show people their supposed fidelity to a cause. And religion is a prop that is much in use. Gruber has given the world a very good word to describe the millions of illiterates and idiots who believe in this stuff called politics. If an atheist is a person who abhors religion, what is the name for a person who abhors politics? That would be me.
