No amount of evidence will ever convince a right winger to abandon her cherished fantasies, it seems. State rolls are cross-checked occasionally and those efforts don't support the charges being leveled here, but the Federalism so dear to the hearts of conservatives leaves the states in charge of voting regulations. So no, the Feds don't maintain a national registry. It wouldn't bother me or the Democrats if there were, though. There simply is no widespread conspiracy, though both parties have small-time cheaters. The faith that cons have in the Democrats' ability to fix elections is never shaken, despite myriad investigations by Republicans in many states and at the Federal level never having come up with anything significant. Such plots would be very easy to uncover and would have devastating negative consequences when inevitably discovered, which is one reason the Parties don't try them. It's not out of their sense of honesty, that's for sure.

Actually what I really think is that there should be a test before people are handed a ballot. Something with teeth in it that expects people to know something about their country.

Then we'd have maybe 10% of the population voting. Is that a good thing? Imagine the battles over those tests, too.

I don't believe Civics is any longer a subject taught in public schools. Why not?

My guess is that conservatives and other defenders of the status quo want to keep people ignorant. If the public understood what was going on, not many current Republicans or Democrats would be in office, and corporations would be reined in. It could also be that the schools (public and private) don't want to become embroiled in arguments over the civics curriculum. Those fights would be politically charged. I'd love to see Civics classes reintroduced.
