Larry, you read but do not understand. If people would actually vote, then it would not be possible to win by driving down turnout for the other side. The campaigns would have to convince people to vote for their candidate, not just get the other Party to stay home because both sides look unacceptable. You may have voted for the black guy on the basis of race; I'm sure lots of other people did too, and lots of people voted against him because of his race too. Does that make sense? Of course not. There's no substitute for being somewhat informed on the issues and voting on them. But it takes more time and effort than most people (at least 64%) are willing to take. We have exactly the officeholders we deserve, because we elected them, either by voting for them or staying home. You voted too, with your ass.
